Match Day 12 - Sardar Extend Lead
5th March 2006

Team Sardar edged Team Jessa 3-2 in the top of the table clash to extend their lead at the top of the table, both teams coming in to this one on the back of unexpected defeats last week. Team Jessa have now slumped to 4 defeats in a row and must be worried about their form with the play-offs just over a month away.

Honours were even between Team Asaria and Team Somji, both were feeling confident about this game after showing some good form in recent weeks. A 2-2 draw was probably a fair result as both teams played well and both teams had chances to win the game towards the end.

Adam Asaria opened the scoring after 4 minutes after some good work from Aarif "Phonzy" Fazal down the left side. A pin point cross found Adam unmarked in the area and he nodded in from 2 yards out to make it 1-0.

Team Somji kept the pressure on and Mustafa Alidina’s equalised in the 11th minute with a shot across the goal which hit the post and looked to be rebounding out when it hit Team Asaria goalkeeper, Mohamed "Ice" Alibhai, and rebounded in.

Team Somji came out flying in the second half and a nice one square ball from Mohammed "Speedy" Hasham found Mohamed Imran Amirali totally unmarked in the box 3 yards out. Mohamed Imran Amirali must have thought Eid had come early as he was gifted a goal, he had enough time to make a cup of tea before slotting the ball away for his 4th goal of the season.

Team Asaria scored deep in to the second half to level the score at 2-2. Hassanain Mamdani brought the ball out of defence on a counter attack, a nice cross field ball to Rizwan Merchant who feigned to shoot and squared the ball back to Hassanain Mamdani who’s first time low drive from well outside the box crept in to the bottom corner. "I almost had it, it touched my foot and went in!" said Team Somji goalkeeper Hassanain Somji.

With 5 minutes to go, Team Somji attacked down the right side and the ball was squared in to the box. There were a couple of ricochets and the ball fell to Mehboob Alidina who looked certain to score as Mohamed "Ice" Alibhai was out of position and the goal was gaping.

"Did you see that save? Did you see that save? The goal was open! That was the best save in Zanzibar Football Club history! It was an open goal! I dived all the way across the goal and blocked the shot! Did you see that save? Did you see it? That was an amazing save. I’m amazing!" said Mohamed "Ice" Alibhai to anybody and everybody within a two mile radius of Scarborough Soccer Association.

The top two met again and it was Team Jessa that came racing out of the blocks with a full attack in the first five minutes. Despite the pressure it was Team Sardar that were up on the board first. On the counter attack, a deft pass from Shan on the left wing found ZFC’s leading goal scorer Abbas Hasham moving in towards the goal on the right and sending a blistering volley into the net to make it 1-0. It took only another five minutes in almost an identical move that saw Hasham net goal #20 of the season. A scare in the first half for Team Jessa, saw ace GK Nadeem, going down hard after keeping the Reds out. After a slight delay however all was well and Team Sardar were able to close out the first half with a 2-0 advantage.

Team Jessa kicked-off the second half and started in similar fashion to the first with some fast pace moves. Despite a good defensive play from Syed Hassan on the boards, Aqil Najafi battled to get the ball across into the box where none other then Captain Jessa squeezed ahead of his marker to bring the deficit down by one. Play flowed from one end to the other with both teams having good chances. It took some fine reflex saves from Nadeem to stop Team Sardar from building on their lead. Hasham hit another rocket of shot close to point blank range that ricochet on the underside of the top beam. However the goal of the night came from Syed Hassan who deftly weaved in and out from Team Jessa’s defense, gliding through three to four players and then sending a beauty right foot shot that left everyone in awe and made the score 3-1.

Despite making some good chances for themselves, Team Jessa could just not get that final touch. They did pull one back near the end of time. A cough-up from back-up GK Najafi Sr. resulted in a gimme for Calbe-Ali Najarali who tapped in to make the score 3-2 in favour of Team Sardar and that is how the game ended. Team Sardar has now built an 8-point gap between them and second place Team Jessa.
